Zinedine Zidane resigns as Real Madrid manager

(CNN) – Zinedine Zidane has announced that he will resign as coach of Real Madrid less than a week after he guided the club to its third straight title of the Champions League.

“I have made the decision not to continue as coach of Real Madrid next year,” said the Frenchman.

The Frenchman’s announcement comes less than a week after his team won a third consecutive UEFA Champions League title, its thirteenth overall title.

He assumed the position of technical director of the club on January 4, after the resignation of Rafael Benítez. In addition to the three champions’ leagues, he won a league title, a Spanish Super Cup, two UEFA Super Cups and two FIFA World Cups.

Zidane, a former French international player won a World Cup in 1998, claiming the ‘Golden Ball’, the prize for the best soccer player in the world, in the same year.

Throughout his stellar career he also won the Euro 2000 with France and a Champions League with Real Madrid in 2002
